We generally recommend spaying female
dogs between age six and nine months. Why?
1. First, it is better long term
health for your pet. Dogs spayed before the first heat are less
likely to develop breast cancer.
2. There is less incidence of
uterine infections as your dog grows older. These infections can
require high risk surgery for the dog.
3. Unspayed females often
develop false pregnancy symptoms.
4. You will not have to confine
your female a dozen weeks out of every year. The related cost and inconvenience
can be greater than the cost of spay surgery. There will be no
unwanted puppies and their expense.
There are false beliefs about the
effects of neutering- loss of spirit, weight gain, permanent immaturity,
and more. The facts are that none of these old tales are true.
What is true is that your dog can live a healthier life. We
recommend that you consider this surgery for a lifetime of better health
for your pet.
If you have questions about this
recommendation, we will be happy to discuss it with you.
