Your new puppy will bring you lots of pleasure for years to come. Puppies, like humans, require more attention at an early age to insure proper growth and development. Puppies require a series of vaccinations to insure protection against, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvo Viruses which can be fatal. Regular puppy visits, including fecal tests for intestinal parasites, are recommended. This outline is intended to help give your puppy the very best care possible.
Annual visits are then recommended to provide your grown or growing puppy with renewals of vaccines against disease and to keep check on its general health and other needs. We are available to help you with any of your pet health questions.
HEARTWORM DISEASE
This debilitating and often fatal disease is very common in the Southeastern U.S. and has now spread to much of the U.S. and parts of Canada. This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. Any dog six months of age or older needs to be tested and put on a heartworm preventive. This preventative needs be maintained all year, even during winter months. We can determine the best preventive for you and your dog at your next visit.
ANNUAL HEALTH SCREEN
As part of your dog’s annual checkup, we will give a thorough physical exam. Our physical examination will help alert you to potential problems which may occur. The physical exam, however, does not allow us to determine the overall health of the internal organs. Only a blood screening can do that. Between the age of two and six, your pet needs to have basic annual lab work. This short procedure will detect any liver & kidney problems as well as check for anemia, diabetes and infection.
Incidence of infectious diseases in cats can be significantly reduced by vaccination. Our clinic follows this vaccination schedule. This schedule gives basic information on what vaccines should be given and when to provide protection to your kitten or adult cat.
Adult cats should come in yearly for a physical exam, vaccines and lab work. A monthly flea and heartworm preventive can be dispensed at this time.

Prevention is the best and least expensive medicine. Early detection can aid in the prevention of many diseases. The geriatric workup that we recommend includes the items listed below, as well as, having x-rays taken and having a complete urinalysis. This is very important at this age in life.
The geriatric lab work needs to be done on a pet that is seven years or older because at this age most pets are entering their “golden years”. Just as many humans need special medical attention, as pets grow older they do too. Today, veterinarians have many choices of special diets, therapies, and medication available to help improve the quality of life for older pets.
Pets have the same dental issues as humans. The only difference is they cannot tell us when their teeth and gums are causing pain and discomfort. Look over these common signs of dental disease to see if he needs to come in for a dental exam.
Signs of Dental Disease
1. Bad Breath
2. Red or bleeding gums
3. Yellow or brown accumulations on teeth
4. Broken or irregular teeth
5. Growths or swelling in the mouth
6. Difficulty chewing food
We recommend neutering male dogs between age six and twelve months.
1. First, it is better for the long term health of your pet. Dogs neutered at an early age are less likely to develop prostate or
testicular cancer.
2. There is less likely incidence of your dog “marking his territory.” No one wants their pet urinating on everything in sight.
3. Un-neutered dogs are more likely to go roaming. They will dig under or jump over a fence to get to a female in heat.
4. You will not have to worry about the expense of your pet being treated for wounds sustained while fighting other dogs because of a female in heat. Also, there will be no unwanted puppies produced.
Your dog will live a healthier life. We recommend that you consider this surgery for a lifetime of better health for your pet.

We recommend spaying female cats between age six and nine months.

2. There are fewer incidences of uterine infections as your cat grows older. These infections can require high risk surgery for the cat.
3. Unspayed females often develop false pregnancy symptoms.
4. You will not have to confine your female a dozen weeks out of every year.
There will be no unwanted kittens and their expense.

A LOST PET IS AT RISK!
Few of us think about our beloved pet becoming lost. However, it does happen. Many calls are made to the Humane Society weekly from owners who have lost their pet. Your pet can become lost in seconds by walking out of an open door or gate. Many dogs become lost by slipping out of their collars. It is surprising that over 70% of pets arriving at shelters are not wearing collars or tags. Unfortunately, if your pet is lost and ends up in a shelter, (possibly far from your hometown) and is unidentified, he or she could be put to sleep in accordance with shelter procedures.
Now, there are nationwide identification systems to help return lost pets quickly to their families. The system we use is called “HOME AGAIN.” It provides permanent identification by means of a tiny microchip, and a national database managed by the AKC that links you to this identification number. Shelters and veterinarians across the country are equipped with scanners to identify pets, and return them to their rightful owners.
